What is Pyrography?


Pyro means fire and Graph means art they are both derived from Greek.

The ancient art of woodburning started as early as the cavemen. Who formed images on cave walls with charred wood or heated hot stones. Some of the work found in caves has been dated as early as 0-700 AD.

Pyrography became more developed in the 1600's and 1700's using pokers as the pen. This art form became more popular in the Victorian era, which was then known as pokerwork.  


Pyrography is the art of burning an image on wood, paper, leather or even cork.  This has not changed for hundreds of years.  It is just them method of creating the image which has become more sophisitcated.  Most modern artist use an electric pen to form their designs.






This is a pyroengraved mate cup of the Nazca Culture dated 0-700 AD.  Displayed in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and History.   Lima,  Peru.
